Dr. Matthew Carter is a prize-winning scholar of ancient languages and one of the most sought-after progressive organizers in the Commonwealth of Virginia. So far from regarding his cerebral palsy (right hemiparesis) as a hindrance, he has become an expert in the piano literature for the left hand alone and gives frequent recitals. Since 2016 he has knocked on over 30,000 doors on behalf of progressive causes, and in 2018 he helped secure the tie-breaking vote that allowed Medicaid expansion to clear the Virginia Senate. He is proud to be a queer person in recovery from alcoholism and an aspirant to ordained ministry in the Episcopal Church.
